Affiliation
SCC is affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) a mainline protestant
denomination that grew out of early American freedom to think and a desire to connect with the spirit of the early church.
There are several important features of Disciples
- Congregationally Governed: We are congregationally governed, so the members of SCC make all important
decisions for our church—calling a minister, distribution of funds for mission, church leadership, and worship.
- People of the Cup: Celebration of the Lords supper is part of our worship service every week – a practice that motivated the
nickname people of the cup and captured in our denominations symbol of the chalice shown at the top of the web page.
- Intellectual Integrity: We are non-dogmatic, meaning we do not insist on a set of beliefs for our members. The phrase that captures this idea dating
from the beginning of the Disciples denominations is In essentials unity, in non-essentials liberty. We are a community that follows the
teachings and heritage of Jesus Christ, but we don’t look to the bible as absolute literal truth and encourage our members to study and learn truth with
intellectual integrity.
- Mission: Ministering and serving those beyond our faith community is a key element of Jesus’ teachings and our denomination. Like the Good Samaritan who responded to the person in need,
we strive to help others—it is about people helping other people at a human-to-human personal level.
