My Story: Larry Van Horn

Why I Attend SCC

For me “church” means worship, study, fellowship and service. Our Sunday morning and special services have, for me, the right blend of singing, preaching and praying. Our congregation is warm and responsive, and that makes Sunday worship a truly uplifting experience that prepares me for the week ahead.

My Faith Journey – Intellectual Integrity

I am not content to be a passive member of the congregation. I want to grow as a Christian and a child of God. For me that means studying and learning that are as challenging as I choose them to be. I team teach an adult Sunday school class that really seeks to understand and apply the fundamental and universal principles revealed in the Scriptures. Alexander Campbell’s (the founder of the Disciples of Christ) guidelines for studying scripture are as timeless today as when our founder wrote them nearly a hundred and fifty years ago. Our congregation is very eclectic but even though we may differ on certain points of theology we are respectful and supportive of each other’s call to walk with Christ in ways that we each find meaningful.

Community

“Church” is something I can’t do alone. Christ taught us that wherever two or more are gathered in his name his presence is manifest. That applies not only to Sunday worship but also to the many activities we enjoy together whether it is Monthly Birthday Cake Sunday, Dinner Club or property clean up day. I need and feel the strength of community in our congregation. Together we are a mighty force for Christ.

Service & Mission

Lastly, Christ calls each of us to be servants to one another. SCC is truly a place where many members with diverse gifts and skills have come together as one body. The opportunities to service our church, our community and our world are endless. I personally find much satisfaction in bringing music and worship one Sunday each month to the residents of the Commonwealth Care Center, in teach Sunday school, in participating in our annual Christmas in April home renovations for those in need, and singing in the choir. There are so many ways to join in making a difference.

Bottom Line

SCC is truly a church where head and heart can meet in Jesus. My life is immeasurably richer for being a member.
